Donald Trump has openly criticized birthright citizenship, the constitutional right granted by the 14th Amendment that grants citizenship to anyone born in the U.S. His administration has tried to revoke this right for children born to parents without permanent residency, such as undocumented immigrants or temporary visitors.

Federal judges blocked the administration’s attempt, but Trump urged the Supreme Court on his platform, Truth Social, to reconsider. He argued that birthright citizenship was originally meant to protect the children of slaves after the Civil War and is now being exploited by people coming to the U.S. temporarily to gain citizenship, calling it a β€œscam.” He also claimed that the U.S. is the only country with such a policy, which benefits drug cartels.

Trump’s remarks come as the Supreme Court prepares to debate the legality of ending birthright citizenship.
