A centuries-old prophecy has resurfaced online following the reported death of Pope Francis on April 21 at age 88, from a stroke. Known as the Prophecy of the Popes, the prediction—attributed to 12th-century Saint Malachy—claims there would only be 112 popes, with the last ushering in the end of the world.
Francis, who succeeded Pope Benedict, is believed by some to be the final pope, nicknamed “Peter the Roman” in the prophecy. The final entry warns of global tribulations and the destruction of Rome.
While intriguing to some, experts and critics dismiss the prophecy as baseless. Still, its eerie timing and the world’s current instability have sparked fresh debate online.
