Renowned Spanish matador Iván Fandiño died in 2017 after being gored by a bull during a festival in southwest France. The 36-year-old slipped on his cape at the Aire-sur-l’Adour event and was fatally struck in the torso by the bull, which punctured his lungs and other vital organs.

Fandiño, a seasoned matador from Spain’s Basque Country, had faced dangerous bulls for over a decade. Despite being conscious after the attack, he died of a heart attack on the way to the hospital. His reported last words were, “Hurry up, I’m dying.”

Fellow matador Juan del Álamo, who later killed the bull, said the accident happened too fast to comprehend. Fandiño had survived previous injuries in the ring, but his death was the first of a matador in France since 1921.

Tributes followed from across Spain, including King Felipe VI and then–Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. His death came just a year after fellow matador Víctor Barrio was also fatally gored, renewing debate over the controversial tradition, which remains legal in parts of France and Spain despite ongoing protests.
