In 2015, 6-year-old Leland Shoemake from Georgia tragically passed away after contracting a rare brain infection caused by the amoeba Balamuthia mandrillaris, likely from playing in the dirt—one of his favorite pastimes.

Leland was a bright, curious child who loved learning, history documentaries, and quoting movies. His parents described him as their “little nerd,” full of life, joy, and love. His sudden illness left doctors puzzled at first, but his condition quickly worsened, and he passed away on September 25.

When his grieving parents returned home from the hospital, they found a note Leland had left behind. It read: “Still with you… Thank you mom and dad… Love,” with a heart that said “mom, dad, love.” It was a powerful message of love and comfort amid their unimaginable loss.

Leland’s story is a reminder to cherish our loved ones and the little moments. Though gone too soon, his memory continues to inspire and touch hearts around the world.
