No parent should have to go through this 💔
The tragic loss of Autumn Bushman, a 10-year-old from Roanoke, Virginia, has left her family and community heartbroken. Described as vibrant, compassionate, and full of life, Autumn’s parents noticed she had become quieter and withdrawn in the weeks before her passing.
They now believe those were signs of emotional distress, fueled by relentless bullying at school and online. Autumn was known for standing up for others, which may have made her a target.
“She was one to stand up for kids being bullied,” her mother said. “That may have made her a target herself.”
Despite reporting the bullying to the school, Autumn’s parents feel not enough was done. They stress how constant exposure to social media makes it hard for kids to escape bullying today.
Roanoke County Public Schools expressed sorrow and promised a review, stating they take all reports of bullying seriously.
Autumn’s mom is urging parents to stay alert: “Go through your child’s phone. Make sure they’re being kind—and others are kind to them.”
Her death is a painful reminder of how serious bullying can be, and how vital it is to listen, act early, and protect children.
Our thoughts are with the Bushman family. 💔
