A Brazilian parent-child duo who once identified as mother and daughter have now transitioned and live as father and son. Raphael, 38, and his 10-year-old son Gustavo, were both assigned female at birth but now live openly as male.
Gustavo began his transition at age 4, while Raphael started his last year. Both received care through Brazil’s public healthcare system—Raphael at Campo Limpo Hospital and Gustavo through specialized pediatric services.
Despite assumptions, Raphael says their decisions were independent: “He gave me the strength and courage to face my own transition.”
The pair have shared their journey with over 24,000 Instagram followers, advocating for respect and highlighting the struggle with people still using their former names.
“Being called Raphael was so surreal—I had never felt so happy,” Raphael shared after attending a trans pride event with Gustavo.
