Untreated hypertension can be deadly — leading to heart disease (50% of cases), stroke (33%), and kidney failure (10–15%). It’s a growing health issue, and recent studies suggest a strong connection between high blood pressure and sleep problems.

Many hypertensive patients struggle with sleep, often turning to sleeping pills for relief. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) warns against long-term use, especially of benzodiazepines. Just 18 doses a year can raise the risk of early death by 3.5 times. These medications can also increase blood pressure.

A study in Cuba found that over 81% of people with hypertension had sleep issues — mainly insomnia and snoring. Similarly, research in China linked sleep troubles, especially insomnia, to high blood pressure.

The takeaway? Sleep problems could be an early sign of hypertension, and using sleeping pills may make things worse. Regular medical checkups and monitoring are key to staying safe.
