Jeri Ryan’s portrayal of Seven of Nine in *Star Trek: Voyager* became one of the franchise’s most captivating characters. Initially brought on to boost the show’s declining ratings, Ryan’s performance far exceeded expectations. She not only embodied the character’s Borg precision but also revealed deep vulnerability beneath her tough exterior.
Before accepting the role, Ryan rejected it four times due to her unfamiliarity with *Star Trek*. She found an episode disappointing and only agreed after encouragement from the show’s producer. Once on set, Ryan faced tensions with co-star Kate Mulgrew, whose established character, Captain Janeway, was overshadowed by the introduction of the highly sexualized Seven. Despite the friction, Ryan’s talent shone through, even in the face of personal and professional challenges.
Ryan also struggled with Seven’s restrictive catsuit, which was so tight that it made breathing and bathroom breaks difficult, leading to her creating the “Code Jeri-Twenty” to signal delays.
Despite the struggles, Ryan found playing Seven rewarding, relishing the opportunity to portray a character who, despite her stoic exterior, had a rich emotional life. In time, Mulgrew apologized for their strained relationship, and the two actresses later shared a warm camaraderie at conventions.
Seven of Nine remains one of *Voyager*’s most beloved characters, thanks in part to Ryan’s exceptional talent and the complexity she brought to the role.
