It comes after the El Salvador president said they won’t return him.
Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, a Maryland father, was deported to El Salvador due to an administrative error under Donald Trump’s order to send 238 immigrants to the country’s “world’s worst prison,” the Center for Terrorism Confinement (CECOT). Despite a US Supreme Court ruling that Garcia’s deportation was unlawful, and a judge describing it as a “grievous error,” his return to the US remains uncertain.
El Salvador’s President, Nayib Bukele, has refused to facilitate Garcia’s return, citing concerns about safety and refusing to “smuggle a terrorist into the United States.” Garcia had been granted legal protection from deportation in 2019 due to gang threats in El Salvador. His wife, Jennifer Stefania Vasquez Sura, has been vocal about the injustice, stressing that their marriage had only grown stronger after a prior restraining order, which she filed out of caution due to a past abusive relationship.
Garcia’s family continues to fight for his return, with his wife promising not to stop until he is home.
