A new BBC documentary has revealed the haunting moment Wendy Rush, wife of OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, heard the sound of the Titan submersible’s implosion. The audio, released by the U.S. Coast Guard, captures a loud bang — later confirmed as the implosion — while she was monitoring the dive from the support ship.
The Titan submersible imploded in June 2023 during a descent to the Titanic wreck site, killing all five people onboard, including Stockton Rush. For days, the sub’s disappearance spurred an international search, but debris was ultimately found near the Titanic, confirming a catastrophic implosion just 90 minutes into the dive.
According to the documentary, a message from Titan saying it had “dropped two weights” gave false hope, as it arrived after the implosion had already occurred.
The tragedy reignited questions about the sub’s safety. Former OceanGate employee David Lochridge had previously warned of serious safety concerns, and reports later revealed the use of discounted carbon fiber past its shelf life. Stockton Rush had been quoted as downplaying the need for strict safety certifications.
The documentary sheds further light on the controversial decisions behind the ill-fated mission and offers a somber reflection on its lasting impact.
