Jennifer James, a 49-year-old single mother from Berthoud, Colorado, tragically lost her life after being shot through the window of her home while undergoing chemotherapy. A four-time cancer survivor, Jennifer was bravely battling the disease for nearly 20 years. On the night of April 28, 2025, bullets struck her arm and chest, and she managed to call 911 before collapsing.

Authorities arrested 20-year-old Ebenezer Worku, who claimed he accidentally fired the gun twice while cleaning it and was unaware someone had been hurt. Worku, who reportedly suffers from “homicidal schizophrenia,” faces first-degree murder charges.

Jennifer’s family and community are mourning the loss of a resilient mother who devoted her life to raising her four children alone. Her eldest daughter Ashley called her mom “the most selfless” and described her death as a “cruel joke” after such a long fight for life.

A GoFundMe campaign was started to support Jennifer’s children, and the town gathered to honor her memory on May 14.
