Mexico Files Lawsuit Against Google For ‘Gulf Of America’ Name Change On Maps
Google Maps recently replaced “Gulf of Mexico” with “Gulf of America,” following a U.S. executive order signed by Donald Trump earlier this year. Mexico has filed a lawsuit, arguing the U.S. lacks the authority to rename an international body of water.
Despite Mexico’s protests, Google went ahead with the change. Users in the U.S. now see “Gulf of America,” while those in Mexico continue to see “Gulf of Mexico.” Other countries have a mix of both names.
Critics claim this move is politically motivated, with Mexico citing historical treaties that define the region. The lawsuit could set a precedent for how digital platforms handle political geography. Mexico has hinted at trade retaliation and possible international arbitration through the UN.
As the case unfolds, the global community is watching to see whether tech companies or sovereign nations have the final say on cartographic decisions.
