The brown recluse spider, named for the violin-shaped mark on its back, is a small, discreet creature that typically measures between 8 mm and 1.5 cm. It has six eyes (instead of the usual eight) and a velvety, light brown body that blends into its surroundings. While not aggressive, it will bite if threatened or trapped.

Its venom is cytotoxic, meaning it damages cells around the bite, potentially causing severe skin damage, fever, vomiting, and in rare cases, more serious complications.

**Habitat:**
The brown recluse lives in dark, dry, uncrowded places. Outdoors, it hides under rocks, wood piles, or dead leaves. Indoors, it prefers quiet corners like attics, garages, or storage areas. It’s commonly found in the US, particularly in the Midwest and South, and occasionally in Mexico and Canada.
