The shortest day of the year is coming soon, and scientists say Earth is spinning faster than ever โ€” for reasons unknown.

Earth usually takes 365 rotations to complete a year, but this has changed throughout history. Factors like the Moonโ€™s distance, Earthโ€™s core activity, and sea levels affect its rotation.

Recently, Earthโ€™s spin has mysteriously sped up. Scientists predict July 9, 22, or August 5 might be record-breaking, with days up to 1.51 milliseconds shorter.

While small, this could impact GPS and timekeeping. Some believe internal Earth changes are behind it. Earthquakes, like the 2011 Japan quake, can shift mass and speed up rotation.

Despite the current acceleration, scientists expect Earth will eventually slow down againโ€”they just donโ€™t know when.
