In May 2016, Hancock County Sheriff’s Deputy Todd Frazier was ambushed by three men at a rest stop in Mississippi. After being beaten and threatened with a box cutter, the attackers began dragging him toward the woods, vowing to slit his throat.

Frazier managed to press a button that released his K9 partner, Lucas, a black Belgian Malinois. Lucas charged the suspects, biting at least one—possibly two—and forced them to flee.

“He had blood all over him,” said Sheriff Ricky Adam. A manhunt was launched for the suspects.

Thanks to Lucas’s quick action, Deputy Frazier survived the attack. The K9 is now hailed as a hero.
