Massive Great White Shark Reemerges Off U.S. Coast — Tourists Warned As Record-breaker Surfaces

The largest great white shark ever seen in the Atlantic has resurfaced, thrilling marine enthusiasts and tourists alike. Named Contender, this massive shark measures 14 feet long and weighs 1,653 pounds. Scientists estimate he is around 30 years old.

In January, OCEARCH, a nonprofit dedicated to studying large marine animals, tagged Contender in the North Atlantic. The organization uses this research to help manage marine ecosystems and support conservation efforts.

Before tagging, Contender’s location was unknown for nearly a month, leaving scientists curious about his movements. On June 7, however, he made a dramatic return, indicating he has been active in recent months.

In January, Contender was spotted about 45 miles from Jacksonville, swimming along the Florida-Georgia coastline. Later, he was detected near the John F. Kennedy Space Centre, though his activities there remain a mystery.

More recently, Contender has turned north and is now heading toward North Carolina’s Pamlico Sound. Sharks often migrate to find new food sources, which is likely why Contender changed course.

Dr. Harley Newton, OCEARCH’s chief scientist and veterinarian, explained that this period—from mid-May to the end of June—is when great white sharks begin their late spring and early summer migration. They move from southern overwintering areas to foraging grounds in the northeastern US and Atlantic Canada.
