Authorities have confirmed that the deaths of two University of Wisconsin–Platteville students are being investigated as a murder-suicide. Hallie Helms and Kelsie Martin, both 22, were found with gunshot wounds in Wilgus Hall on May 19, just two days after their graduation.

Helms, an elementary education major, was pronounced dead at the scene. Martin, a psychology student and assistant resident director, was transported to a hospital but later died. Preliminary findings suggest Martin was shot by Helms, who then died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The university canceled final exams and offered mental health support to the campus community. In a statement, UW-Platteville expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support, calling the tragedy a painful moment for their tight-knit community.

Governor Tony Evers also responded, urging Wisconsinites to keep the university in their thoughts as the investigation continues.
