The UK is seeing an unusual rise in scabies infections, with over 3,600 hospital cases reported. Doctors urge people to seek treatment early if they notice red, itchy spots—especially between fingers, wrists, groin, and waist.

**What is Scabies?**
It’s a contagious skin condition caused by mites and spreads through close contact. Symptoms include intense itching (worse at night) and a bumpy rash.

Young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals may get it on the head, neck, palms, or soles. A severe form called *crusted scabies* can affect larger areas with flaky skin.

Prof. Kamila Hawthorne warns that social stigma prevents people from seeking help, particularly in northern England where cases are rising.

While not life-threatening, untreated scabies can lead to complications and worsen other skin issues. A shortage of treatments may also be contributing to the outbreak.
