Nia Ayers, 24, a licensed practical nurse from St. Cloud, Florida, was arrested after home surveillance footage showed her abusing an 18-year-old quadriplegic woman with cerebral palsy.

The victim’s mother discovered the abuse on May 3 after noticing injuries on her daughter. Video showed Ayers taping the non-verbal teen’s mouth, shaking her, pinching her, and even holding a cloth over her mouth. The teen is dependent on a ventilator.

Ayers, who had worked in the home for over a year, now faces charges of aggravated assault and is being held without bond. Police are reviewing more footage and say additional charges may follow.

St. Cloud’s police chief called the case “tragic and sickening.”
