The Axial Seamount, an undersea volcano about 5,000 feet deep and 300 miles off the coast, could erupt soonโ€”possibly any day now. It last erupted in 2015, reshaping the seafloor and dropping it by over eight feet.

Scientists, including those at the University of Washington, say the volcano has already inflated to the same level seen before previous eruptions. While current seismic activity is still low, with 200โ€“300 daily quakes, itโ€™s expected to rise to over 2,000 per day before an eruption.

Though difficult to observe, such eruptions offer valuable scientific insight. Thankfully, experts agree there’s no threat to human safetyโ€”even a major eruption would likely go unnoticed on land.
