๐ Underwater volcano in the Pacific could erupt any day now, scientists warn ๐ณ It is showing signs that have experts on edge โ this is no drill ๐ฎ Full story and eruption timeline are in the comments below ๐
The Axial Seamount, an undersea volcano about 5,000 feet deep and 300 miles off the coast, could erupt soonโpossibly any day now. It last erupted in 2015, reshaping the seafloor and dropping it by over eight feet.
Scientists, including those at the University of Washington, say the volcano has already inflated to the same level seen before previous eruptions. While current seismic activity is still low, with 200โ300 daily quakes, itโs expected to rise to over 2,000 per day before an eruption.
Though difficult to observe, such eruptions offer valuable scientific insight. Thankfully, experts agree there’s no threat to human safetyโeven a major eruption would likely go unnoticed on land.
