Millie Smith and Lewis Cann were thrilled to learn they were expecting twins. Millie had a strong feeling she was carrying two, which was confirmed at the ultrasound. However, doctors soon discovered one of the babies had anencephaly, a life-limiting condition. At 30 weeks, they were told their baby, Skye, would only survive for minutes to hours after birth.
The couple chose the name “Skye” to honor her short life. Skye lived for three hours, and during that time, Millie and Lewis cherished every moment. After her passing, they received support through a bereavement midwife and a “Daisy Room” for grieving parents.
However, Millie felt that people quickly stopped acknowledging Skye, leaving her feeling as though her baby had never existed. An innocent comment from another mother about not having twins triggered her grief. It was then that Millie came up with the idea of a purple butterfly sticker on incubators to signify a baby loss in multiples, a symbol that would help others understand and support grieving families.
Millie’s initiative grew into The Skye High Foundation, which promotes the purple butterfly campaign and provides support to grieving parents worldwide. Though nothing can erase the pain, Millie hopes the foundation helps others navigate their hardest moments. Her surviving daughter, Callie, is now seven years old.
