The food we eat greatly impacts our health, including cancer risk. The Standard American Diet (SAD) includes only about 8% protective foods, which may contribute to rising cancer rates. While no single food prevents cancer, consistent healthy choices can lower risk.
Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, and kale contain isothiocyanates, which reduce inflammation and deactivate carcinogens. Turmeric’s curcumin has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. Mushrooms, especially reishi and shiitake, support immunity and may reduce prostate and breast cancer risk.
Allium vegetables like garlic and onions are known for their anticancer compounds. Wakame, a seaweed rich in iodine, has shown potential in lab studies to suppress cancer cell growth. Lycopene-rich foods like tomatoes and watermelon help fight free radicals. Beta-carotene-rich foods—carrots and sweet potatoes—may also offer benefits. Lastly, fatty fish like salmon and sardines, high in Omega-3s and vitamin D, may help reduce cancer risk when consumed regularly.
