If you’ve seen red, angry-looking spots on your dog’s belly, it’s natural to worry. But according to the Morinville Veterinary Clinic in Alberta, these are usually harmless black fly bites from lying in the grass.

They may look bad but don’t bother most dogs, heal on their own, and don’t need treatment. These flies appear for a few weeks in spring and then disappear.

The clinic’s Facebook post reassured many pet owners, saving them an unnecessary and costly vet visit. Black flies are common in northern parts of North America, especially during spring.
