Tuberculosis (TB) has overtaken COVID-19 as the world’s deadliest infectious disease, according to the World Health Organization. In 2023, TB claimed 1.25 million lives and infected 10.8 million people globally. Caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, TB primarily affects the lungs but can also harm other organs. It spreads through the air and disproportionately impacts low-income countries.

Symptoms include a persistent cough, chest pain, night sweats, and weight loss. TB is preventable and curable in most cases, yet it remains a major threat, especially to those with HIV or limited healthcare access.

The WHO urges global action, with new vaccines in development and strategies in place to prevent future outbreaks. Collaborative efforts are essential to tackle TB and protect global health.
