If you rewatch *The Big Bang Theory* Season 4, you might notice Penny (Kaley Cuoco) missing from two episodes. Thankfully, it wasn’t due to any behind-the-scenes drama — the real reason was much simpler.

In September 2010, during a break from filming, Kaley Cuoco fractured her leg in a horseback riding accident. To allow her time to recover, the show’s producers left Penny out of Episodes 5 (“The Desperation Emanation”) and 6 (“The Irish Pub Formulation”). Instead of forcing her return, they subtly adjusted the storyline, keeping the show’s flow natural.

When Cuoco came back, the writers made a thoughtful change: Penny shifted from waitress duties at The Cheesecake Factory to a bartender role, so Kaley could sit during scenes as she healed.

**Fun Fact:**
Originally, Penny wasn’t even part of the first pilot! A different character named Katie (played by Amanda Walsh) was tested but didn’t resonate with audiences. The creators reimagined her as the sweet, relatable Penny we know today — a perfect contrast to the quirky scientists.

Despite her injury, Kaley’s dedication to *The Big Bang Theory* never wavered. Over 12 seasons, she turned Penny into a beloved, iconic character and remains a fan favorite today.
