While death is a universal experience, much about it remains mysterious. Recent research, however, sheds light on how humans may subconsciously sense death through smell.
Scientists found that when a body begins to decompose, it releases putrescine—a foul-smelling chemical. Though we may not consciously recognize it, our brains respond instinctively, triggering fear or avoidance, similar to animal behavior.
Researchers Arnaud Wisman and Ilan Shira suggest this reaction is an evolutionary survival mechanism. Unlike sex pheromones, which draw people in, putrescine prompts retreat or alertness—often without us realizing why.
It’s a fascinating glimpse into how our subconscious senses danger, even through scent we may not consciously detect.
