Waking up occasionally at night to use the bathroom is normal, but frequent trips may indicate heart issues. Nocturia—urinating more than once per night—can be caused by diabetes, an enlarged prostate, or heart failure, where the heart struggles to pump blood properly.

A Japanese study of 1,882 people found that those who woke up to urinate had a 40% higher risk of hypertension. However, high sodium intake, common in Japan, is also a factor in hypertension, which contributes to heart disease, stroke, and heart failure.

Nocturia may also disrupt sleep, which is linked to heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. If you experience frequent nighttime urination, consult a doctor.
