Mark Zuckerberg announced that Messenger users will receive notifications if someone takes a screenshot of a disappearing message. This update, introduced in January 2022, enhances privacy for end-to-end encrypted chats.
Messenger’s disappearing messages, similar to Snapchat’s, automatically vanish after being viewed. Screenshot alerts, already common on rival platforms, have now been rolled out in the U.S. and are expected to expand to Europe.
The update, which also applies to Instagram, aims to address security concerns. However, many users have pointed out ways to bypass the feature, such as using another device to take a photo. Some have criticized the update, arguing Facebook should focus on more pressing issues.
