Pilot Jonathan Campos, one of the two pilots involved in the tragic mid-air collision with a US Army helicopter on January 29, had a final, heartwarming conversation with his family before the crash. His uncle, John Lane, recalled speaking to him as he boarded the plane, with Campos sounding happy and excited for an upcoming family cruise. Campos, who graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 2015, had dreamed of flying since childhood. He was praised by his academy for his dedication to flying.

The other pilot, Sam Lilley, was also a skilled aviator with American Airlines and had just months left before being promoted to captain.
