When my mother-in-law, Melissa, came over to help with my colicky baby, I thought I’d finally get a break. But what happened left me questioning her intentions, my instincts, and my marriage.

Exhausted, I handed her my daughter, Emily, and went to rest. Hours later, I woke to Emily’s cries. My phone and the baby monitor were missing, and Melissa was outside, laughing on my phone. She admitted unplugging the monitor and leaving Emily unattended for over 30 minutes. Furious, I told her to leave and not return without my husband present.

When Peter came home, he defended Melissa, saying she meant well. Our argument left me doubting whether I overreacted or stood up for my daughter’s safety. All I knew was Emily deserved better. Was I wrong?
