This story, originally reported in November 2015, is being republished.

In Back Hill, a woman came under police protection after discovering an unexploded bomb hidden in an old apple tree in her garden.

Christine Battersby had hired a specialist to remove the decaying tree, which revealed a hand grenade lodged in its trunk. The police quickly cordoned off the area, and Colchester’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit safely removed the grenade the next morning after securing the site overnight with sandbags.

The EOD Regiment, part of the British Army, specializes in handling explosives and played a vital role in resolving the situation. This incident highlights the lingering impact of wartime artifacts and the importance of specialized units in ensuring public safety.
