Tonsils, part of the immune system, can be removed through tonsillectomy to treat chronic tonsillitis. However, they can sometimes grow back due to residual tissue left after surgery. This is more likely when a portion of the tonsils remains, particularly in younger individuals or those with certain genetic predispositions. Symptoms of regrowth include sore throats, difficulty swallowing, and inflammation.
If you suspect your tonsils have regrown, visit a doctor for confirmation. Most cases don’t require another surgery unless symptoms are severe. To reduce the risk of infections, stay hydrated, maintain good oral hygiene, and avoid smoking. While surprising, tonsil regrowth reminds us of the body’s regenerative capabilities.
