Note: we are republishing this story, which originally made the news in September 2015.

In September 2015, a 7-year-old named Alyssa received a worksheet from her teacher with a harsh note in red: โ€œStop writing your name in cursive. You have had several warnings.โ€ The incident sparked debate after a photo of the worksheet was shared on Facebook.

While teachers’ instructions are important, discouraging Alyssa from practicing cursive seems unreasonable. Cursive writing requires focus, patience, and practiceโ€”skills that should be encouraged, not shamed. Alyssaโ€™s effort deserved praise, not reprimand.

Fostering a love for learning is crucial, and adults play a key role in supporting children as they explore new skills. Rather than discouraging creativity and curiosity, teachers should nurture a childโ€™s willingness to learn and grow.
